Zuni Fetishes

The word "fetish" is defined as an object worshipped as the representation of a spirit that is credited with magical power to help and protect the worshiper. The root of the word fetish is derived from a Portuguese word meaning "small power object." Though these intricate carving are commonly called fetishes, the Zuni people refer to them as wema:we, which directly translated, means "animals."
Fetishes are now fashioned by more than 200 authentic Zuni Carvers. Every carver brings a unique design to the trade.
