Zapotec Weavers

Teotitlan del Valle, the home of the Zapotec weavers is located 20 miles east of the city of Oaxaca. The villagers are descendants of the Zapotec Indians, who are responsible for the building of Monte Alban. Many of the families living in Teotitlan del Valle speak both Spanish and the native Zapotec languages.

Originally all of the designs on the rugs were derived from patterns observed in the Zapotec ruins surrounding Oaxaca. Recently the weavers have begun to use their own designs. The wool used by the weavers is hand spun and dyed. Natural dyes are collected from various sources including plants, animals and soils. After the wool is spun and dyed the weaving begins. Most rugs require a week or more to complete. Larger rugs require significantly longer.

Here is a list of items to look for when purchasing woven rugs:

1) Made from 100% wool

2) Tightness of the weave

3) Use of natural dyes

4) Straightness of the edges

5) Intricacy of the weave pattern.

Buying rugs with these characteristics will insure your rugs will last and hold their value.
