Chunga Baskets Wounaan
& Embera Indians, Darien Rainforest |
|
Chunga Baskets are woven complexity, utilizing pre-Columbian designs highly prized. This racially pure indigenous group live as their ancestors did prior to the coming of the Europeans. The dyes are all natural coming from substances found in the jungle. The coil construction method is very laborious using both the palms of the Nahuala and the Chunga. These Indians believe that the plants have spirits and are woven into the baskets. They weave abstract designs they call 'cultura' or animals and insects found in the rainforest. These are true collector's baskets. |
